Where did Lolo's parents come from?
Communism, Great Wall, Emperors, Silk Worms, Foot Binding, Tiananmen Square 1989, The Forbidden City, Cholera...I went on to read Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze. And we talked about the opium war, tea, silk, bad luck and laissez-faire. Its so hard to stick to just reading- history, art, politics, economics and science sometimes even math blend in and we end up swirling around it.
Here's a video (same as the one below) we watched about the Terracotta Warriors that I would label as History but the video ended with Physics.
At some time during our China high, talk of rebuilding the Forbidden City was discussed suggested material was Popsicle sticks, here are some Forbidden City maps. Fear engulfed me as I imagined the time and magnitude of the project. I had a vision of stepping on glue and our entire living room filled with newspapers. Anyway it did not materialize. A and As made a timeline of the Dynasties.
I am so happy that my children will have memories of me reading to them. When I read to them, I have their time and attention. Its amazing that they connect what we are reading to previous work/ project/ conversation or material we have done. Now we have moved on to Mongolia. And here is the first book my kids and I read that has Mongolia in it...
