What an on going Science Project for us! Here's L painting our lovely Mrs Freckles a few days before she started laying eggs.

Crying over the Curve

As doing Fig. 187 from the book
"Three Dimentional Treatment for Scoliosis"
Cried when I got home after having dinner with 2 of my childhood friends. I am thinking about As and her curved spine. I went online and read, cried some more, chated with my friend in SG. Read some more info on scoliosis cried again. Thought really hard. Pondered. Fell asleep. Woke up, cried, searched on line again and read again! From 20 degrees its now 28 degrees. From mild scoliosis my daughter now has moderate scoliosis! Yes I know its been a while since the x rays revealed this but  its eating me up now.
We have stopped doing the therapy that was previously prescribed and are simply doing The Schroth Exercises and keeping a diary. I was really hopeful I would find a physical therapist here who would be willing to take on the challenge of helping my As using the Schroth Book and not the ussual therapy  but it has not happen until now. One physical therapist assigned to my daughter turns out to be a student told me that she is too busy with school work to read the schroth book (which I was still about to order online at that time) and if it is not prescribed by the doctor they can not do it?! DUH!!!
I am not trying to teach these professionals what to do. I am begging for help, for my child. No body I know died of scoliosis. A number of my friends have it and they are wonderful happy people. So far As curve is not putting her life at risk but if the curve moves at this rate then she will end up needing surgery which then carries its own risk! What is available in terms of the therapy we had, obviously did not work out as I expected. Of course it can be argued that if we did not exercise the curve could be worse!?? Am I suppose to feel better with this!? Now, old exercises are out and The Shroth Excercises are in! Or atleast what we could understand. Really working in the dark here!

Looking Forward to Saturday

I am so excited for Saturdays Mommy Meet Up. I had inquiries asking how much the fee is? Again Mommy Meet Ups at The POD is free unless stated that there is a fee. Its a meet and greet activity for moms to be with other moms at this special time of our lives! The only requirement is for participants to come on time. As we must start and end on time.
This Saturday from 10 to 11:30 am, artist and Mom-to be Yanyan will be at The POD and we'll be doing some belly art. I met Yanyan in Childbirth Preparation Class last Saturday and the stars align!

We are celebrating and enjoying normal healthy happy pregnancy!!! This might be new to some of the moms. I have never tried it myself. I got the stuff yesterday and could not help it! I must try it!!! Test the waters so to speak! So excited!!!

Its a good thing I tried it coz it suddenly occurred to me that it might be difficult to take off?

The great news is: Its easy to take off! We just needed wipes and it rubbed off right away!!! So I am excited to see Yanyan and all the other moms (5 confirmed today). It seems like no water is needed when applying the face paint. I can't wait for Yanyan's instructions!
And L said, "Mom I don't think you can paint your tummy."
Me: Why not?
L: "Because your tummy mommy is just big and wobbly soft not round like a ball you might have a hard time putting the paint!"
Wahahahahahahahaha!!!! OUCH a bit here! Anyway I have other body parts to paint! So excited!!!

I need and got to talk to someone...

I could not sleep last night! What's going to happen to my gentle As! How come nobody cares!?! What to do! I can not sleep! I called Spinal Dynamics. I have been looking at their site! Its not like we are going but how come we have nothing like this here in Davao City! The largest city in world (in terms of land area)!!!
Rant! Rant! Rant!
My call was answered by a woman named Heather and she asked me all the information she could get about As's condition. She was calm and interested very different from reassuring and dismissive notes I have been getting where I am!
Rant! Rant! Rant!
They have a 5 day one on one program (will 5 days be enough? In the book The Schroth Method they use to do therapy for 3 months!?!)
I had questions about bracing! Heck from 20 degrees in January we are now up to 28 degrees and its only July! In a few days As will turn 12 and then what? Growth spurt more curving! Waaaaah!!!
I wanted braces back in January! Even though the braces we saw at the first Rehab place that we went to was a big turn off!
It was premature to get a brace in January now what?
Heather handed the phone over to a Physical Therapist named Cindy. And her answer to my questions:
Yes get a brace!
She should have gotten a brace as we should be expecting agrowth spurt etc etc etc...
We should get an in brace x ray. If its a good fit, we should see a 50% reduction in her curve when wearing the brace.
There could be as high as a 5 degree error margin in when it comes to reading the x ray! WHAT!!!?? I am going to search for body brace for my As!
More research!!!
My dear husband does not like the thought of getting As a body brace! We have to brainstorm too!!!

Learning Filipino and Cursive

I bought a Filipino Book for L with a title that would be hard to forget! This is my effort to have Filipino Subject. She reads the title to me and I read the poem and translate it to English line per line.

Since L in into writing in cursive and I am into hitting a lot of birds with one stone we work with me dictating the English translation to her while she writes it. This way she can practice cursive, work on listening/ writing and spelling while doing Filipino.

So far so good! I still have not found a Filipino book with answer key/ teacher's guide for A and As. This should be enough for L for now, I think.

Bake Away!

As soon as I arrived home from my short trip to Manila, L asked me if we could bake!!! She started reading her little red cook book to me as if it would entice me to get up and bake right away with her! Last Sunday we went to the grocery and she brought her list (which she wrote herself) with her! Yesterday, as promised, was her baking day!
She has read the recipe so many times in the days leading up to baking day! We started by measuring the ingredients for Simple Sugar Cookies. This is similar to the recipe that we used when we made Lemon-Flavoured Farmyard Cookies

Here's the recipe and how to make it Simple Sugar Cookies:
from: Debora Pearson's "My Animal Cookie Kit"
Mix together: 125 g butter or margarine, softened & 125 g white sugar
Add: 1 egg & 1 tsp vanilla extract
Add:
Mixed together: 235 g plain flour (all purpose flour)
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
Then we made the nests. L bought too little marshmallows (she only bought 30 g instead of the 180 g that the recipe needed) and she was not able to find  flaked coconut in the grocery, so we improvised by adding more butter and chocolate. We also added flax seed which is not part of the recipe.

And the finish product! Oh look at her so happy serving! Thank you so much L. If not for you we would not have such desserts!

Finally! He Not Only Shows Me Some Interest...

He stays and finishes 3 pages!
My 4 year old, Nh finally held a pencil (crayon actually) and wanted to "do math". The thing is, he has said this before and I did sit with him, once with a blank paper, then with a notebook, with a scratch paper, with a workbook and he would leave me in less than 10 seconds!
This time he remained seated and went on scribbling using L's old workbook. He was even giving me instructions on what to do! He was talking and talking while "working".

He named all the animals we colored. Cooperated when I asked him the sound of each animal (totally new) and agreed when I gave him instructions based on the instructions of the book. I tried to cover as much ground:
by writing the names he assigned to the animals (Whitty for the horse he is coloring etc)- for letter recognition
naming the colors we were holding - color recognition
and allowing/ indulging him to talk and talk while coloring- so he will stay longer at the task!

I don't think he'll remember much of what I was at! The colors, the letters and the reading instruction. Still I feel the need to do it! When we were coloring an apple Nh said this is red. Then he looked alarmed and said, "Don't touch that! Its the apple of the witch and you are most beautiful girl in the world, the witch will poison you!" Whoa!!! ♥ ♥ ♥

So seriously cute! We went on talking about Snow White while coloring and I went on saying it was impossible and why we should not willingly accept food from strangers and how I can manage to fight the witch... Talk talk talk until we finished the page and it was time to join the sisters for some snack.
A milestone for Nh!!! I am so thrilled! Can I now claim that I have been patient? At least in waiting for Nh to be ready???

Made Possible Because We are Homeschooling

I tagged my daughter in an article I saw. I thought it was a good idea for her to read it since she is reading Shakespeare. Turns out she was so into it that she said she wanted to go! All the way to Manila!
My husband and I talked about it! We asked each other:
Should we go along with this?
Can we afford it?
What will happen to the younger ones while I am away?
We had to go as far back as why we went ahead to home school the children 7 years ago.

While my husband and I were deliberating, A asked me to call the British Council Office, which I did. The lady who received my call said she'll call me back with the details to the workshop. I was out of the house when she called back in the afternoon of the same day, so A got the call! It turns out that the workshop is free but it was invitational. So, A decided to email Ms. Ann of the British Council. Ms Ann replied saying she can join if her parents signed a form (parental consent).

My husband and I could not imagine how we could do stuff like this when we were her age. For one we were both from traditional schools so all our activities revolved around what our school had to offer. While A is growing up with internet (email, me tagging her in an article) and outside of school. I told A she can go if she has enough savings to pay for 2 airplane tickets. Turns out she does! All that red envelopes during Christmas and Birthdays, including P20 and coins plus selling our trash/ recycables, is now paying off for her!
We asked A ,"You are going to spend that much from your life's savings to do this?"
Her answer, "Yeah!"
So my husband and I talked again wether it was a good idea for A to spend that much from her savings (value for money, making an investment etc etc) and then we talked to A.

I called my aunt and asked if we can stay with her. When she said yes, everything seemed set! We bought the tickets online, went to the bank with A, and packed our bags! The hardest part of the trip for me was leaving As, L and Nh! While I was happy to be going with A, I miss and thought of the 3 younger ones.
A, fixing my pictures in my computer while waiting at the airport.

Its amazing in a way how some of the people in the workshop reacted similarly to how my husband and I reacted when A told us she wanted to go and do this. They asked "You came all the way here just for this?"

And I was like, "Yeah." where else will/ can we get Hiphop Shakespeare Workshop but here  and now!
Day 1 of the Workshop
It should be obvious to me by now that my eldest daughter enjoys the theater/ singing/ acting/ dancing/ stage. Also, I must admit that I can not teach my daughter Shakespeare, I can only buy her the materials and she has to read it herself (Shakespeare was not taught during the workshop his works were just discussed). A has probably read more Shakespeare than the average high schooler in Davao (this is a wild guess and based on the materials I had in school at her age). Plus, I don't get rap music and can't dance Hiphop so where else will she get this!
Morning of Day 2

A with Akala and high school(there were 3 of them out of the 20+ people who joined).
With her group after the performance. They were divided into smaller groups for their mini projects
A, with ladies from the British Council

She had the time of her life and made new friends!!! I learned so much from accompanying my girl! I am not sure if it was more for me than for her. I am most delighted that I was able to meet up and have lunch with Jen of Next9 and talk on the phone with Jen of Chronicles of a Nursing Mom. I now have new stocks for the little shelf in The POD.

I don't think this would be possible for her/ us to do if we were not homeschooling. I don't think the article would have mattered nor could we be able to afford the trip if she were in school. I wonder if she'd be interested in this stuff too if she were in school? She can not miss her classes if she were in school too. She is now thinking of college! Imagine that! On the last day of the workshop, my Aunt took us to UP Diliman and A was so happy! Oh well this shall be for another post!

Note: I need/ want a better camera!!!

Breastfeeding Station at the Departure Area

The Breastfeeding Station at the Departure Area of Francisco Bangoy International Airport a.k.a Davao Airport is bigger and better!

The first breastfeeding station in the airport that I saw, was totally disappointing. But this one is obviously miles better! The airport employee told me that there's another one on the ground floor, but I did not get to see that. This one, in the departure area, would be the third one with in the airport.

I am so happy!!! So proud too!!!
